RESUME
ABOUT THE ARTIST I have been working as a full-time artist since 1990. I'm currently working on a series of paintings based on my travels in Texas, Greece and Iceland. My dedication to teaching art began in 1963 when I taught art in Afghanistan as a Peace Corps Volunteer. For over forty years I have been teaching art and communication skills to adults throughout the United States and internationally.
My work is in collections at Texaco, Unisys Corporation, United Parcel Service, Dayton-Hudson Corporation, Piper Jaffray, Campbell Mithun, Hamline University, North Dakota State University, and numerous others.

My latest work has been abstract: black and white or black with limited color. Using only black and white requires working with relationships that have to be tight and precise--a visual equivalent to walking a tightrope. The addition of limited color creates other challenges in keeping balance. Maintaining harmony between visual elements is the challenge and joy of my work.
Playfulness, experimentation and judgement are the principles behind my art. I begin all work whimsically not knowing exactly how it will look in the end. I experiment to make the visual relationships taut and constantly judge whether or not formal artistic elements are resolving themselves into lasting relationships.
My imagery is drawn from remembered landscape. I complete my work in the studio relying on memories of places and events where I have lived and visited. As a teacher I have taken groups of artists on one or two week painting workshops in Greece, Iceland and France. Those experiences certainly have provided me with imagery. However, the greatest sources for my work are my childhood home in the Hill Country of Texas and Afghanistan where I served in the Peace Corps.
It is difficult to make abstract art, because, as I see it, there are no--nor should there be--rules for how to proceed. I love to see something I have completed but it is the process in reconciling the relationships between line, mass, color, value, and subject that most intrigue me.
